Lactose intolerance

Lactase occurs naturally in the mucus layer of the small intestine. Lactose intolerance occurs if the human body doesn't produce enough of this lactose splitting enzyme.

In individuals who are lactose intolerant the bacterial flora of the colon instead takes over the degradation of lactose (milk sugar) after these individuals have consumed milk or other lactose containing food. During this process performed by the bacterial flora of the gastrointestinal tract gas can be formed and the stomach get swollen.

Balloon stomach can be an indication of you having lactose intolerance.  Other symptoms of lactose intolerance are for example diarrea, bowel pain and sounds from your stomach.

Food supplements containing "lactase enzyme improve lactose digestion in individuals who have difficulty digesting lactose". The EU (EFSA) approved health claim is stated inbetween the quotation marks.

Please visit the website of the Swedish National Food Agency for more information about lactose intolerance and how it differs from the much more severe condition called milk protein allergy.
